PDP Adopts Oladipupo Adebutu as Consensus Candidate for 2027 Ogun Governorship Election

The Peoples Democratic Party (Peoples Democratic Party) has formally adopted former governorship candidate Hon. Oladipupo Adebutu as its consensus flag bearer for the 2027 governorship election in Ogun State, following a party primary held on Sunday in Abeokuta. The decision signals the party’s renewed strategy to reclaim the state from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Adebutu emerged through a consensus arrangement during the governorship primary, where he was overwhelmingly affirmed by party members drawn from across the 236 wards in the state. The process, according to party officials, reflected a unified front aimed at strengthening internal cohesion ahead of the 2027 elections.

The primary was officially concluded by the chairman of the PDP Governorship Primary Panel, Chief Afolabi Ariyo, who announced the result through a voice vote. He declared Adebutu duly returned as the party’s candidate after what party stakeholders described as a largely peaceful and coordinated exercise.

Party leaders at the venue emphasized that the consensus approach was designed to avoid internal divisions that have previously weakened opposition efforts in the state. They expressed confidence that the selection of Adebutu would reposition the PDP as a strong contender against the APC in the coming election cycle.

Although no formal policy manifesto was unveiled during the primary, party members repeatedly referenced the need for “restoration of development focus” and improved governance structures in the state. An official at the event, speaking on condition of party consensus sentiment, described the outcome as “a unified decision to move Ogun forward under a tested political figure.”

The development sets the stage for early political positioning in Ogun State, where both major parties are expected to intensify groundwork ahead of 2027. Political observers say the early adoption of a consensus candidate may give the PDP more time to consolidate its grassroots structure across the state’s wards and local government areas.

As the political landscape begins to take shape, attention is likely to shift toward how the PDP’s internal unity will hold and how the APC responds to an early challenge from a reorganized opposition front in Ogun State.
