Barcelona Seal Permanent Deal for Egyptian Teen Hamza Abdelkarim in €1.5m Move

Barcelona have confirmed the permanent signing of Egyptian teenage forward Hamza Abdelkarim after activating the buy option in his loan deal from Al Ahly, securing the highly rated striker for an initial €1.5 million with performance-related add-ons that could raise the total fee to €5 million.

The 17-year-old centre-forward, who stands at 1.82 metres, impressed club officials during his short loan spell despite a delayed debut. Abdelkarim scored five goals in seven appearances in the U19 league, quickly establishing himself as one of the most promising young talents within Barcelona’s academy setup.

Club sources describe the move as a “low-risk, high-upside” investment, reflecting Barcelona’s continued emphasis on youth recruitment amid ongoing financial constraints. The deal also includes a 15% sell-on clause in favour of Al Ahly, ensuring the Egyptian club retains a stake in the player’s future development.

Abdelkarim’s rise has been swift. Before his move to Spain, he had already featured for Al Ahly’s senior side, an uncommon achievement for a player of his age, and currently wears the No. 9 shirt for Egypt’s youth national teams. His growing reputation was further underlined by a surprise inclusion in Egypt’s provisional squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a call-up that drew attention across African and European football circles.

Barcelona’s sporting director Deco has been instrumental in pushing a recruitment model focused on emerging talents rather than high-cost transfers. The strategy is designed to rebuild depth while staying within strict financial fair play limits.

Under new head coach Hansi Flick, Abdelkarim is expected to continue his development within the club’s youth ranks while being given opportunities to train with the first team. Coaching staff are said to be particularly impressed by his physical presence, finishing ability, and tactical awareness for his age.

While it remains too early to predict his long-term role at the club, insiders believe Abdelkarim could follow the pathway of recent academy graduates who have transitioned into senior football in recent seasons.

For Barcelona, the signing represents another calculated bet on youth. For Abdelkarim, it offers a chance to develop at one of Europe’s most demanding football institutions, an opportunity that could define the early trajectory of his career.
