Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen was taken to hospital after briefly collapsing during an international friendly in Odense on Sunday, prompting the abandonment of the match as players from both teams gathered in concern.
The 34-year-old, currently with VfL Wolfsburg, lost consciousness in the 65th minute at Nature Energy Park before regaining awareness moments later. He was able to walk off the pitch unassisted after his implanted cardiac device activated, according to team officials.
Denmark’s national team doctor, Morten Boesen, said Eriksen responded quickly after the incident. “He regained consciousness within a short time, spoke with teammates and medical staff, and was in stable condition when he was taken for further examination,” Boesen told reporters.
The match, which saw Denmark national football team leading 2–1 at the time, was subsequently called off as players and staff from both sides formed a protective circle around Eriksen during treatment. The decision to abandon the game was made out of respect and concern for the player’s health.
Sunday’s incident inevitably revived memories of Eriksen’s cardiac arrest during a match at the UEFA Euro 2020 in 2021, when he collapsed on the pitch in Copenhagen. That episode led to the installation of an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD), allowing him to resume his professional career against significant odds.
Since then, Eriksen has staged a remarkable return, featuring for clubs including Brentford FC and Manchester United before moving to Germany. His comeback has been widely regarded as one of football’s most inspiring recovery stories.
Messages of support quickly poured in following Sunday’s scare, with former club Tottenham Hotspur and fans across the football world expressing hope for his swift recovery. Teammates were visibly shaken but reassured by the midfielder’s ability to leave the field on his own.
Medical evaluations are ongoing, and Danish team officials have indicated that further updates will be provided once tests are completed. For now, the focus remains firmly on Eriksen’s health, as the football community once again rallies behind one of its most resilient figures.
