Gunmen Abduct Ondo Monarch, Injure Wife in Night Raid on Palace

Gunmen have abducted a traditional ruler in Owo Local Government Area after storming his residence in a late-night attack that left his wife injured. The incident, which occurred around 8:05 p.m. on June 13, has heightened fears over the growing wave of kidnappings targeting local leaders in the region.

According to initial reports, six armed assailants invaded the palace of Baale Adelana in Odo-Oriya, overpowering security at the premises before forcibly taking the monarch away. During the attack, the monarch’s wife was shot and sustained injuries. She is currently receiving treatment at a hospital, where sources say she is in stable condition.

Residents described the assault as swift and coordinated, with the attackers reportedly arriving under the cover of darkness and escaping through nearby bush paths. “It happened so quickly. People heard gunshots and then silence,” said a local resident, who asked not to be named for security reasons. “We are all living in fear now.”

The Nigeria Police Force in Ondo State confirmed the incident and said a large-scale search operation is underway. Tactical teams have been deployed to comb surrounding forests and rural routes believed to have been used by the kidnappers.

A police spokesperson said additional security personnel have also been stationed across Owo and neighboring communities to prevent further attacks and reassure residents. “We are doing everything possible to rescue the monarch unharmed and bring the perpetrators to justice,” the spokesperson stated.

As of the time of reporting, no group has claimed responsibility for the abduction, and there have been no confirmed ransom demands. However, the silence has done little to ease tensions in the community, where concerns about the safety of traditional rulers and residents continue to mount.

Security analysts note that attacks on traditional leaders, though less frequent in the past, are becoming an alarming trend in parts of southwestern Nigeria. Such incidents often disrupt local governance structures and erode public confidence in security arrangements.

Community leaders in Odo-Oriya have called for increased protection and more proactive intelligence gathering to curb the rising threat. “Our monarchs are symbols of unity and authority. When they are targeted, it sends a dangerous message,” one elder said.

The abduction of Baale Adelana adds to a growing list of security challenges confronting Ondo State, where authorities have repeatedly pledged to tackle criminal activity in rural areas. For now, residents remain on edge, hoping for swift action that will secure the monarch’s release and restore a sense of safety.

Police say updates will be provided as the search progresses.
